Holly, the red eared slider I rescued, has been a bit of a challenge when it comes to basking because she is so big. She is also a bit shy, although she is very sweet. After many, many failed attempts I finally got an above tank basking are that works. Holly LOVES it! :D

My apologies for the lousy pic. My Internet is down so I'm on my iPhone.

A HUGE thank you to all who helped by offering advice and pics! I really, really appreciate it! :D

Thanks everyone! I will post full pics whenever my Internet company decides to get in gear. It's a pain in the rear doing it from my phone.

The ramp is plexiglass with wood underneath the basking area because she was too heavy for just the plexi. I used 100% silicone to glue aquarium gravel and large rocks onto the ramp. The green stuff up top us zoo med reptile carpet. And the plastic plants are to help her feel like she is hiding. Lol!

And the plexi ramp was super easy. Just melted with a heat gun! The box was trickier. I used silicone on the sides and....don't laugh....duck tape. :p

Am I missing something? RES are aquatic, they need to be in water, that turtle you just showed us is younger or older somehow I just don't know and am missing something. That tank is not big enough also. Go to an actual fish store and ask for a cheap tank that they have to sell cheap because it's cracked somewhere, when I moved several of my bigger tanks got cracked so what was to became my only fish store was there. He had to buy several from him because all of my extra tanks or the tanks that show how old I really am were there also.
My dear old dead daddy used to do the stuff Jason is doing right now and it sounds like my sneezing DIL is with him....oh hell

If that is the size of her enclosure she def. needs something larger, unless I am missing something.
A cement mixing tub makes a good and cheap enclosure.

You guys are missing the big picture. You can only see the basking area. You're looking at a top view of the short end of the tank, water is underneath.

You can see the aquarium hood that is over the water portion, in the front of the picture.

I agree with emysemy u can't really tell the size of the tank just by looking at the top, I could be a 75 gallon for all we know

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Calm down people. As I stated, I am without Internet and that is an IPHONE pic.

My tank is NOT cracked! It is a very nice glass 55 gallon aqaurium. Yes, I know a RES that size would prefer bigger, but I'm guessing since I rescued her from a 2 gallon I highly doubt she cares. The pic is the BASKING AREA ONLY! You are missing all of the water and over half of the top of the tank. Please do not tell me that I do t know how to care for my turtle.

Sarah you did a great job! My RES loves basking on his above tank basking area. He moves to different areas up top and slides into the water off his ramp. I'm sure she is loving it too:)

No body was telling you that you dont know how to care for your turtle. BUT I will say this. The clamp lamp hanging over water like that is not safe at all. The clamps are know to FAIL and so are the little clamps that use the wing nut to hold the clamp to the light. I would fix this problem ASAP b4 you come home to a zapped out turtle.

I know its a hard angle to really get the idea of the set-up, but the light is over the basking area, not over the water.

You're right about the clamps/wing nuts failing though. I've taken off all my clamps and now hang the lights from the ceiling or from a stand.
