Hi, I am considering getting a tortoise(probably a redfoot) but I am in college and therefor have limited space, and also finances. I only have a year and a half roughly until graduation and am wondering what all I need to do/have for a tortoise. I am a complete newbie in this area and would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks you in advance for the assistance.

Start up to care for them correctly is pricey but once you have what you need all set its pretty easy to keep up. Babies need high humidity so look at enclosed chambers. If you start looking before you het the tort you will be better off and so will you baby :)

I just got my first tortoise (a russian) which was quickly followed by a second (a redfoot). My only caution would be to make sure you have a place to live after you finish school where you will be able to bring your tort with and provide the space it needs. It would be sad to have to give it up after a while because you move into an apartment in the city something.

Just my opinion, it might be better to wait until you're out of college and settled in somewhere first. This could be a time of a lot of change in your life and tortoises take stability. if you really want one then I would suggest going with a hatchling because you can get away with a smaller indoor enclosure for a while. But hatchlings can be fragile and difficult to care for so do a lot of research and think about it.

Tortoises need A LOT of space to move around and they really benefit from time outside in a large safe enclosure too. They are not the best pet for someone with limited space.

They also don't like change, so moving them around can be quite stressful.

I would look into other pets until you have more space and more stability.
