Burn out slowly, or do they just suddenly burn out, like normal light bulbs?

I'm having a harder time keeping my setup at the temperature I want with my current bulb, and wondering if it could be the bulb dying, or if that is even a thing.

There are many factors as to why its difficult to keep temps where you want them. size of enclosure, wattage of bulb, ambient room temp, type of encosure, type of substrate, how many hours the bulb runs, etc.

most bulbs just fuse out

Yeah, most bulbs will still work...until they suddenly "don't." Rarely is there any gradual die-off.

We need to know what type of bulb you are using. If its a MVB then yes there is a gradual reduction if UVB/UVA output which is why replacing them is recommended at least yearly. Heat should be consistent, but you must understand that objects retain heat, so as something is exposed to heat it absorbs and reflects it increasing the heat of the surrounding area.

Are you running your AC more now that it is getting hotter?

I'm far too cheap for that. :D

In the time since I've posted this thread, I realized that upgrading his water dish to a deeper pool and then placing that directly under the lamp was probably not a great idea to keep things warm. Moved his water to a less direct spot so the substrate can absorb the heat and warm the place up, and now everything is good!
