I've recently noticed the small slope on the back of Keyser's shell has been getting more pronounced.

Keyser a year ago, for reference:

I know divots are usually a sign of MBD, but MBD suddenly developing would be really strange, as (s)he's about three years old, and has had no extreme change of diet in the past year (hay/greens/mazuri/miscellaneous veggies).

He looks normal to me. I posted the same question a whilenago with mine and I guess its pretty comon with captive torts. Just make sure he's getting enough sun and calcium and he will be fine.

As long as this tortoises calcium and D3 needs are being met, I think you have a totally normal tortoise of Mali descent. Most of the imports in years past came from Mali and they had the more sloped backs like that.

is he getting lots of natural sunlight and calcium?

As much as NorCal weather allows. I may start introducing a calcium supplement, just to be safe.

Interesting. Now I have something more intelligent to say than, "Uh, Africa," when people ask me where (s)he is from.

Is Mali a region, a specific tortoise, or person? This is interesting to know.

I was going to eel you exactly what Tom said. Here's what it will look like when he's bigger.

Yep, I feel silly for not knowing that :) I just got so excited because I have a flat back Sully too!

I rescued Terry Tortilla and she was diagnosed with MBD. The dip in her carapace is fairly centered. I don't know if that makes a difference but I thought it might? Keyser's carapace dip is definitely further back.
