It's not just done with tortoises. Lots of reptile keepers/breeders do this for a number of snake species as well.
As long as the natural habitat for the particular animal gets cold then it should be fine as long as you follow a few good precautions like proper temp setting, no food for a few weeks prior and making sure the fridge doesn't seal so there is an air supply.

My only concern with the pics in the story is that the tortoises are just on shelves, they should be in boxes so they can't hurt them self if they do happen to move around. Of course the pic in the story may have been staged that way for more effect (like the veggies on the door).

i saw this yesterday on digg.com!
i agree, keith...those torts look so haphazardly placed in there... must be a dramatized photo.
also, it probably isn't a great idea to have people food next to tortoises.

It says in the body of the article that she usually wraps them in tea towells, but the towells were removed for the picture. Also...does anyone else besides me think the tortoises on the bottom shelf of the fridge (not the door) look like sulcatas?

Actually I thought the ones on the bottom look more like marginated.

My issue with the photo is some of them looked like they were awake, and the poor little legs hanging through the slots.

They are Marginated tortoises on the bottom. In the article it said she wrapped them in towels and unwrapped them for the picture.
