I have two red foot tortoises and I've read that cuttle bone is good for them. How do I offer it to them and do you reccomend it?

I've left mine in my Sulcata's enclosure and every once in a while I hear him nawing on it or moving it around. It varies on how to give it to them.

It's funny to see the evidence of the cuttle bone on their face

Just toss it in they will eat when they want to, or you could crush it in a mortar an pestle and sprinkle on food.

Yeah cuttle bone is good stuff, I started putting a piece into each enclosure with the young tortoises and they munch on it often. It takes a few days for the babies to learn that they can eat it. But all of my baby sulcatas, testudo, and leopards will bite and eat at its edges.

Some tortoises prefer it weathered... put it outside for abit... then retry it with them if they won't take it fresh...

You can also scrape it over the food with a knife.

Some torts love it, some ignore it. You are better off with a dash of calcium powder on the food if you think they need the calcium, though.

The thing about cuttlebone is that only SOME of it dissolves in the intestines, the rest passes through. Calcium powder is cheaper per dose, and better absorbed.

Cuttlebone, however, is a nice treat!
