My inherited Hermann's has got what appears to be either a vertical crack or a very strange growth on the back stutes of his carapace. What could this be? The lines sort of 'step down' and it creates a little arrow pointing up. Does anyone know what this could be a result of?

Thanks!

It appears you have that tortoise living on the pink towel/blanket?
Yes that will keep him clean but it's totally wrong and neglectful. S/he needs the proper substrate, lighting, heat, uvb, diet etc. They are not ever going to live on a towel or blanket. Please change things up to make it proper and appropriate for her/him!

I was presuming that he was placed on the towel/blanket just for taking the picture.

Thank you for your concern but please do not assume things so quickly. He obviously does not live on that very spot the picture was taken. Please calm down a little. Thanks.

It was simply a request to do what is NEEDED for the proper care. No ill will was meant or said so you might be the one needing "calm." You can not ask a question then get out of calm when someone says something you do not like. Glad your tort does not live on the towel, it is not that uncommon for tort owners to do that not knowing they are "hurting" the tort not helping. Good looking tort and hope you stick around on the forum.

Perhaps you're right. I just don't like it when people jump straight to conclusions and make assumptions about how I care for my animal based on one single picture, already implying it is being neglected.
