Peanut, you could have started the next "Great Debate" of 2011!! What does everyone think?

My view: (and it's not because I'm a vet)
-pets are no longer the disposable commodity that they once were, the veterinary oath has even been changed (just happened) to reflect this. Our pets are now, for most, a member of the family and are treated as such. I recently referred a patient to a specialist practice and the clients dropped $6000 like it was nothing....they were taking care of thier child. Each and every one of my animals is dear to me (except the barbado ram that keeps bumping me in the butt when I go into pasture), and when I lose one, I mourn. Do I mourn like I lost a brother or child, no..probably not, but it hurts none-the-less. For example, woke up this morning to find that my youngest roo, Julia Roooberts, had shattered her right rear leg overnight and I was forced to put her down and I'm not too proud to say that I am an emotional mess because of it, but it doesn't hold a light to when my grandson had heart surgery 12 hours after he was born. I guess it's all about degrees.

I apologize for the OT, but I just wanted to tell Dr. Todd how sorry I am about Julia Roooberts. That's a terrible thing to wake up to on your birthday. Do you know how it happened? (curious...are the roos tame?)

I am also very sorry about Julia Roooberts. It is very sad when you lose a pet, especially one you were very close to. I had a peregrine falcon once that had been inbred (didn't know that when we got him). His feathers hadn't come in right and we were waiting for the molt so his feathers would look great. He was very funny and just bursting with personality. More like a dog. He'd follow you around, sit nicely on your hand, and he LOVED to splash around in the sprinkler. After about 8 months or so he started to get really grouchy and upset for no reason. It got worse and worse until one day I noticed his eyes were getting cloudy. Took him to a specialist (who is also a falconer) and said that he had cataracts. He was suffering, getting blinder and blinder, and truthfully was going crazy. We ended up having to put him down as well. I can't tell you how hard it was for me.

About the ad, I do think it's funny. Not because people that use them are funny, but rather because it's such a strange thing to see in the classifieds (AH! Finally a casket! I've been looking ALL OVER for one of these!:p). I just don't think that's the way to get a lot of business making caskets. For instance, I and many other see the ad but do I have any animals to put in one? No. By the time someone sees the ad, the whole burial situation is probably already done and taken care of.

I also think that little dachsund is funny. He's thinking to himself "GULP:: Is this for me?!?!"

On a serious note, they do look very nice.

I don't have a problem with this as long as they are not spending the money on this and not other necessities, it is their money let them spend and grieve in their own way.

Whenever any of our pets died one of my son's would make a wooden box for them, and we would bury them in the garden. I have also spent lots of money on cremation for any of my dogs who died. They are all here with me...every one of them that we lost. I've also spent thousands of dollars on my Bull Terrier when we found out he had a liver ailment. It was hard and we had to do without a few things to help him, but we all agreed it was worth it. Having said all this, there is still no comparison with loosing a pet to loosing a child, even though all our pets are part of our family.
I am so sorry to read about Julia Roooberts. I enjoyed her pictures that you posted, and I think it's a wonderful thing when a man can show emotion. To me it always means that they have a kind heart.

I am not crazy about coffins I preffer urns, but that is just my personal feeling. As far as for one of my dogs I think if it were buried in one of those coffins it might slow down the prosses of ( I don't know how to say this) becoming dust or rotting and going away. I don't have a problem with someone else using them. I just wouldn't want that box buried on my property.
BTW~ My Dad and my Nana are both kept on my piano in nice little urns:)

Its been a long time since I was in grammar school, but if my memory is serving me correctly, we were taught that to be cremated is a sin. Don't ask me why. When you're a kid you don't question the nuns for fear of being chastised. So I grew up knowing that I would be buried and not urned. But now that I'm older than dirt and I can't think of the reasoning behind that practice, I'm thinking that I'm going to be cremated. Its just a dead body after all. I won't be there.

But as for a pet, it seems to me having an urn on the mantel would be a nicer remembrance than a box buried in the ground...that is, unless it was buried under a tree planted for the occasion. That might be nice too.

I guess there's a market for all kinds of things in this world. Let's get together and invent something and make a bunch of money. Anybody got any ideas?

Yvonne the Catholic church has changed it's stand on cremation. You can be cremated, but you still have to end up in consecrated grounds. So the urn would have to be placed in a Catholic cemetery. I, myself, am not going to die. I am looking for someone to bite my neck. :D:D:D

As long as part of me is cremated and spread on my land in Texas, I don't care what happens with the rest of me.....heck, you can bury the rest of me face down and use me as a bicycle stand for all I care....(sorry for the graphic visual...hahahahaha)

i dont want to rot in a box, and i dont want my pets too either.. i hate fire.. but cremation is what has been done and will be. ashes can be buried or spread or kept on a shelf.. i want my pets to be spread with me somewhere when that day comes..
Tomorrow i go to a funeral fora friend.. didnt even know she was sick, it was fast. mixed blessings there.. but we had made a promise to each other, that when we went, that we would make sure our pets went too. ( not the living ones, ones past and already cremated.) It will be done, and the funeral home was more then happy to accomodate. the urn will be big, her dogs are being put in with her, and she will be buried with her son. bitter sweet.
sorry about your roo.. did you ever post pics of your crew?

When my mother died, we spread her ashes in three different Important Places. Very illegal, I suspect, but at least there was some laughter in the sneaky dipping of ashes in a public place.

I am so sorry about Julia Roooberts.

that's very nice Laura and have some pics that I will share in the near future...having a bit of a hard time with a lump in my throat every time I look at Julia's pics, but will gladly share her very soon.

Rian...great story...always nice when the loss of a family member can be remembered with tears of laughter along with tears of sorrow.

Truly sorry to hear about Julia Roooberts. :(

Cremation for me...the Faith I follow considers burial in the ground to be a waste of land that should be used to grow produce. My wife and daughter know where my ashes are to be spread.

I always find it funny when I see TV or movies where the ashes are fine like wood ashes. My sister and I asked to see my Dad's ashes and they were very coarse and chuncky. Almost like sand or gravel. It was a strange time for us and we really didn't know what to do or how to let go.
At first I wanted to bury him in my yard, but could not stand the thought of him rotting.
