My step son recently brought his tortoise to our house from his other parents. This poor girl has been neglected for 3 years and did not have a proper housing our anything. Her claws are LONG and I mean a good healthy inch. I can see her quick. I noticed sometimes it's difficult for her to move around and climb on stuff because she is actually using the claw to hold herself up on the paw. I was wondering if trimming is necessary if so what do you use that is best? Toe nail clippers?

Can we see a picture of it first before you clip it and what specie is your tortoise?

As soon as I get home, I will definitely post a picture. She is a Russian Tortoise. Give me about an hour or two and I will upload one.

Hi Nesha:

If you can see the quick, then you can safely trim the nails. Just use a people toe nail clipper and don't go into the quick.

Russian tortoises do seem to have longer nails, naturally. So a picture will let us see if they need clipping or if it's natural.
