I HATE handling the cactus. Even "spineless" isn't spineless and its even harder to see the spines. I use heavy duty scissors.

Add blueberries and cuttlebone and cut.

I'm not sure how you feel about playing with fire, but a quick flaming once-over on the pad will burn off the little invisible spines.

Awww that's a cute photo at the end. I use a scouring pad to get the spines off but a couple always get stuck in my hands.

Ha! I use a scouring pad as well...but then when doing dishes later with it I end up with phantom spines in my fingers.

Charlie, those guys look great.

I use separate pads for cactus and dishes ;)

I throw them on the grass and use my foot(in shoes) and rub off all the spines on one side and then flip them and repeat. No spines in fingers or toes, hence the shoes.

Do you have to worry about the torts eating the spines and causing damage to them?

I've never actually handled cactus but as a Hispanic I have eaten them and I must admit they're really good lol. My grandma used to grow them for herself. I've seen a lot of people clean the spines off and they make it look so easy. They just place the pad on the cutting board and run a big knife along the pad from the top part of the pad towards the bottom part. Of course the pad is flat on the cutting board but they go from what would be the top to bottom if the pad were standing upwards. Occasionally this will miss a little cluster or two but they just go back that spot. I plan on growing some now that I have Cloudy the leopard but turns out my grandma got rid of them not too long before I got Cloudy [UNAMUSED FACE] Anyways as soon as I can get some pads I'll try to clean them up and get a video. Hopefully it's as easy as it looks lol

BTW I've had the cactus grilled, sautéed and even raw. Raw is my favorite with lemon, salt and some powdered chile.
