I introduced a new male and female into the herd after six months of quarantine. Here is the new male and one of our established males posing off like they were going to fight. I watched them for an hour and this is the extent of all they did. Guess who backed down first.

Wow, awesome pix! I'd also like to know who won. They look about the same size and evenly matched, so I'm guessing the resident succeeded in intimidating the noob?

BTW - Letting male tortoises fight (without letting them really hurt each other, of course) is thought to be a good way to promote breeding. It seems that fighting elevates their testosterone levels, and encourages sperm production and fertile mating. You might find your females laying eggs, and some hatchlings pipping after that!

The resident male on the left did in fact stare down the newcomer. The testosterone definitely rose, the resident male picked a fight with the giant male and they rammed each other until it got dark and they went their separate ways. It was all closely monitored. While the two resident males were going at it, the slick new male proceeded to go after the girls. They all just need to establish the new pecking order. It w very peaceful before adding the new male and female to the mix. Good times!
