I started breeding parakeets about 5 years ago and learned a lot. From one clutch I got a 'splay-legged' baby...so first of all I used vet wrap to put her legs together while they are still growing, so she wore that wrap for 2 months and nothing, then I started physical therapy on her...3 times a day for months and nothing...well, not nothing...I made her feet stronger by accident...this is how she spends most of her time...100_1749.JPG

I have her cage set up with horizontal ladders all around so she can lay down and rest her legs. I don't think she realizes she's handicapped.

Hi Maggie, Even with handicaps, it's amazing how they adapt to their environment.
I have a Red Naped Amazon, José, I adopted him 4 years ago, at the Age of 36.
When I adopted him he had severe Scissor Beak.
My Avian Vet was amazed that he was able to feed himself, but if you think about it, problems like this come on slowly, and they adapt to their condition. Your lil buddy grew up with the condition and was able to "Make thing's work"
Note; José see's the Dr. every 3-4 months to keep his Beak in check, hopfully to permanently realign the jaw.

I had budgies for 12 years and my oldest one passed in 2020. What a year that was. I'm kinda looking to get another sometime soon.
