I like damp Cypress mulch, and its cheep at Home Depot!

aspen shavings aren't great, i wouldn't use them. and hay is good if you keep it dry because it molds. i personally use a mixture if top soil and peat moss. make sure you bake any top soil you buy because it could have spores in it which will bloom in the enclosure. for a hide box i use just peat moss and a layer of sphagnum moss on top
