what is the flat rock vs on the substrate diff for basking?

Most will use a rock. It will get warmer the normal substrate and it helps to warm up the underside better. I use a small rock, one he can fit on, but doesn't take up all the basking space. Gives him a choice, rock, no rock. What's funny, he usually chooses no rock
