What kinds of things do your torties like to bask on? Flat rocks or tiles? Right on the substrate? Looking for suggestions as to how to make one of Liam's favorite spots in his enclosure more comfortable for him. :)

He will have the option of both if you get a small enough rock, yet big enough for him to fit on. Put a flat rock, I like rock better then tile as it isn't as slippery and they won't find tiles in the wild. If Liam wants, he will bask on the rock, if not he will lay in the substrate next to it. They usually don't always bask just right under the bulb. Well mine don't, he usually is off to the side.

One more thing, I notice that when my leopard is outside on a little cooler day, he likes to bask on the rock. Inside, where it is always warm, like the substrate more. If that helps at all.

I use flat stones or slate that is large enough to extend beyond the center of the beam of the basking light (the hottest point). This allows a tortoise to have the option of basking without having to be directly under the hottest point of the light each time. A stone absorbs and distributes the heat to the edges better than the same area would if it were just substrate material.
