Wow! He's beautiful! He seems like an older turtle too.
If you would like to train you're turtle to be more comfortable around you, feed him red fruits (like tomatoes or strawberries). They also really love worms and any other invertebrates with high protein levels.
If you even would like him to come to you on command, make a certain noise every time you feed him and when he's eating. This process will take a long time since he has not been doing it sense he was a baby.

Cute Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina.) I would guess a young adult female from your picture, but if you post some pictures of the back feet, bottom shell and the bottom side of the tail we might be able to more positively determine the gender for you. I agree, my box turtles always make me feel more relaxed and at ease.
