    cracked beak!

So my poor A'tuin has a cracked beak. He's been monitored by the vet, who also sees dogs/cats/rabbits, but was trained at the exotics hospital that I trust, but is there anything I can do to keep it from going farther and farther up? Should he go in to the specialist to get it looked at?

    falling off counter!

I feel so horrible! i was weighing Atu, and had him balanced on an upside down cup so he couldn't get off the scale, and he managed to knock himself off the cup and onto the floor, which is more than 3 feet down and hard wood! i immediately got a soak ready for him and checked for any hairline...

Random Question about Cats and indoor Turtles

So while perusing the magical land of Pinterest, I came across some pretty cool indoor enclosure ideas for water turtles specifically, but land turtles/tortoises as well. What is the general consensus of the forum in regards to open topped (no screen or what-not) and having cats? I know my...

Found this plant this morning! Trying to get a running inventory of safe foods from the yard, and came across this guy: low grower, clumps like a dandelion with the ways the leaves grow up from a central point. no flowers yet. stem is about 4" long?

    Finally getting started!!!

My little A'tuin (RT) is finally getting a summer enclosure!!! Soooo Excited!!!!! The past couple of weekends my DH and I have spent trenching the perimeter of his 4'x8' pen, and pouring concrete down into it so he can't burrow out of the pen on accident (whether he's escaping or not, don't...

Red-Foot on CL in Everett, WA

Dunno if this guy got bought already or not, but thought I'd bring it up somewhere (sorry if this is the wrong place!). I would take him myself, but I know i'm not to be trusted with bio-security, my mind wanders and distracts too easily, and my current RT has been diagnosed with mycoplasma...

    Weaning off Bad Foods

So we've had A'tuin the RT for 6 years and 5 months (gotcha date 1/20/09). when we got him from a family off of CL, he was being fed roma tomatoes, romaine, broccoli, and carrots. He had an overload of parasites, got him cleaned up of that, and omitted everything but the romaine. started feeding...

    Beak Trimming....

So my RT, Atu, is very very lazy, and when we give him food he drags it right off any rock, brick, plate, any hard surface, to then munch on soft dirt. if he leaves the leaf on the hard surface, he just bites the tops that are sticking up in the air. His beak isn't super long, but I've tried...

    new enclosure for A'tuin

Finally got around to revamping the display case that I got off of Craigslist! built a second level, took out the shelving, replaced the back sliding doors with a solid piece of wood, and took the glass top off and replaced with a screen. Microchipping Russians

I was just wondering, since Russians are so tiny, if it's wise to try to get them microchipped? I worry, since I will be building an outdoor enclosure at our new home and want to be able to prove he's mine if he gets out and is found by someone.

    house plants

how often do houseplants get fed to tortoises? like what percentage of their diet ends up being various houseplants? I just wonder since I saw on www.tortoisetable.co.uk that there are quite a few listed as being safe, and I didn't know if that meant as treats or as a regular part of their diet....

    Shell & Beak Health

So I've had A'tuin for about 5 1/2 years, and he hasn't grown at all in that time frame, and is still under 5" SCL (currently at 12 cm). Also, his shell has had these ridges along it, from before I got him, that I'm guessing is pyramiding? I'm not positive though, since he's the only shelled...

So the other day I was drying my tortoise Atu and I noticed his little hook at the end of his tail is gone! It is healed from where it tore off. I feel horrible for not noticing before.
