Dawn, YOUR dogs are the ones you should worry about most. Not one person (and there are many...) whose loving gentle family dog chewed up their tortoise ever though it would happen. Most of the time the dogs ignore the tortoises and pay no attention to them... until the day they do pay attention to them. The damage is catastrophic and irreversible. Please let me help you avoid this tragedy.
Now that I have this info, I STRONGLY recommend you spend the time and effort to put a cover over the top of you new enclosure.
Read this thread. Not just the initial post that I wrote, but read some of the horror stories that were shared later on in the thread:

Trust me, I have read the horror stories (and will read again) which is why I made his oasis so tall, just to be safe. I could have made a "standard" raised bed but wanted him out of reach and safe. Our German Shepherd is older and does not jump (can't due to a broken back leg that happened before adoption, he as an elderly adoption 4 years ago) and neither does our Great Dane (not the sharpest tool in the shed, a baby gate stops her and she does not like closed spaces.) Tuleo's previous oasis was a kiddie pool (you can see photos in my past posts) that I would cover if we were not right with him, no one ever disturbed him. They have been taught to ignore him. I have been around dogs long enough to know that could change though. Plus my dogs are not outside dogs. They go out to pee and come in, too warm for a fuzzy German Shepherd (who abhors heat) and a Great Dane with heat issues. I am not trying to ignore you, just giving you my thoughts thus far. Again, this is why I made it so tall - to be safe and thinking ahead. I will read the link again, for sure.
Grandpa Turtle - thank you. Good call!
