That's a mature female Eastern Box Turtle. No telling how old she is, but she should be going about the business of laying eggs and keeping her species from becoming extinct!
They were legally protected from wild collection in Indiana in 2004:
You need to contact the state Wildlife and Fish department...they will have the up to date regulations about captive bred or out-of-state animals. You may need a yearly permit from them for legal pet animals. Since changes were made in 2004, you are better safe than sorry contacting them.
Use the link I posted above to get in touch with Indiana Wildlife.
I am a bit confused. You already have two Box Turtles and didn't know the one in your photos was also a Box Turtle? Or did you mean that you couldn't tell which species of Box Turtle it was?
Are all five of those pix the same Box Turtle? One of the shells in the first set of pix looks a bit different than the others which is why I ask.
Your post is somewhat un-clear. If this turtle was found in the wild, LEAVE IT BE and allow it to go on about it's business. Taking turtles from the wild is not only wrong, but could be illegal in your state. Acquiring captive bred easterns and three toed's is not too difficult, just scan the sites for this and they come up periodically.
Good to come here and ask TJ...and glad to hear your other turtles are doing well.
Relax guys, TJ's a kid....he's got the passion and he's learning. Maybe try to pull, not push younger guys since my feet at his age, had 8" spikes when pushed......he's also coming up on 1 year here, like me.
Okay so let's see if I have this right. The one in the pic is wild but stays in your yard?
Then you have two other ones you purchased and a paint?
Whatever you do, do not take them from the wild. They will spend their life time wanting and trying to get back to their home territory and they dont do well as adults in captivity. It's also illegal to take from the wild in most states.
