Hi my name is Sharon. I live in the south west part of Florida 30 minutes out of Tampa. I live with my aunt, 10 yr old cousin, my service dog and esa cat. We just got a 3 month old yellow foot tortoise. For right now she or he is in a 20 gallon glass tank. The tank has repti bark on the bottom a feeding dish and water dish the tortoise can climb into. We currently have a clamp type lamp for heating. We just got the tortoise today and by the time we got home it was eating its own poo. Is this normal for a yellow foot?

Hello and WELCOME.:D. Yes tortoises will eat their own poop. Dog poop too if they find it.

BTW, it's. Not good to let them eat dog poop. Especially if the dog has been medicated or dewormed, etc.

Hi Sharon:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

I have a few YF tortoises. They're pretty nice little tortoises.

Yes, they do eat their poop. Think of it as recycling. They're getting the nutrients that they missed the first time around. It makes me gag, so I try to clean up after them before they can find it.
