Just a fun question for everyone. What made you pick the tort that you have? Why this particular tort?

I picked a sulcata because I think theey are the cutest babies :)

plus they are very sweet :tort:

I bought my Russian because I had no idea what I was doing. I hadn't researched torts really, so when I saw her ad, I went and checked her out. I loved her immediately even though something said "This isn't the tort you're looking for".

Then I got sulcata hatchlings because I knew they WERE what I was looking for. :D I wanted something that did well in AZ with little adjustments and would get big and awesome. I've also experienced their very friendly personalities.

I picked Cooper (Sulcata) because our friend has a 8 year old named George, and he was just awesome! The 3rd time I got to see him I fed him some greens and he crawled up in my lap (all 40 or so pounds of him) and ate like that for 10 or so minutes. I just loved his personality and hoped I would get one that was kind of like him. As is turns out Cooper is even more of a people tortoise, at least to dad and mom. I let Georges mom hold Cooper a few months back and he didnt like it much, he tried to crawl out of her hands very quickly, so I took him back and he just sat there and looked at her like "who do you think you are!?". It was so funny, she said "he must love you!" because he just sat in my hands and didnt move as he was just happy dad had him back. Plus another reason I got him was because I wanted one that gets big. Have a great day!

Mine are either turned into me or I adopt them out from the turtle club, I only bought one turtle and that was my very first red ear slider, I picked her because she was the only one swimming around.

I'd wanted a sulcata since I was 14, ever since I saw them in Reptiles USA 1998 Annual.

I research all of the Mediterranean tortoise I wanted some small. I looking for a Greek, Hermanna, or Marginated. Yet, I ended with a Russian, which I love, because I couldn't find anything local.

However, while looking for Mediterranean I saw my first redfoot and fell hopelessly in love with them. That is why I'm getting one VERY soon.

When I got my first Sulcata, I had no idea what type of tortoise it was and the person I bought him from did not give me any information, but he was very cute and out going and had a great personality so after that I figured I would stay with Sulcatas. Up until I got my box turtle hatchlings I didn't even consider a different type of tortoise or turtle because I love Sulcata so much now.

I have 7 species of tortoise and 5 species of turtle - why? Because I want too, lol.

I would have trios at least of EVERY species of tortoise if I could - and there are a few more turtles that I would like, including Fly Rivers.

I picked Russian tortoises because I believe they are the best tortoise species to keep here in Colorado. I picked a male and a female because I want to breed them once they're adult. And I picked these two individuals because they were two of the healthiest I had ever seen. :)

Heres a list of what I like in a tortoise:
Friendly
Personable
Unafraid
Big
Hardy
Able to live outside in my area full time, with the right set up
Easy to feed

Which species should I go with?

Indy was an impulse buy. :D

I went to Petco to pick up bird food and saw him in his aquarium. He ran right up to the glass to greet me. I couldn't resist.

(I don't recommend this method of choosing a tort, but I'm glad I got him. :p)

I wanted a tortoise that was not too small and that could live outside in AZ. I decided on a leopard because they don't dig up the yard or tunnel like a sulcata but are somehat similar, can live on native AZ plants, and becaue I think they are the prettiest tortoise babies.

I think I got Bowser because I love big animals. Weird? Um, probably, lol. I am so happy that I have her because she has the funniest attitude. I would love an aldabra. They look so amazing and they are the cutest thing!

I want an elephant also, but every time I tell my husband he just rolls his eyes and sighs, lol

They picked me. Well they needed homes anyway. I didn't even know what they were, but knew I needed to help the person that was moving find them homes and I fell in love with them. Two years later my life revolves around them.

I got a Hermann's because they are hardy and can survive outdoors year-round where I live. In few years, when I have time/energy/money to build a heated hut outside, I might get a Burmese Mountain tortoise.

My very first tortoise was my Grandfather's pet Hermann's, which he found around the end of WWII, and I inherited her at his passing, when I was a teenager. 19 years later, upon her passing, I went looking for another Hermann's, but found nothing locally, so, eventually, I got some different tortoises (a pair of Greeks, 5 Russians, a hinge-back, a Leopard and a sulcata). The Greeks and the hinge-back were sickly and didn't live all that long, and the Leopard and the Russians were killed by a predator (possibly coyotes), leaving only the sulcata, who kept getting larger while my spine problems got worse, so I found her a new home.

About a week later, I found out that a guy not too far away was breeding Eastern Hermann's torts, so I went over and bought Jennifer, and later rescued an Iberian.

After joining here and falling under the influences of some of our breeders, I decided to try breeding Hermann's tort, so I added Ophelia, Apollonia and Ptolemy to make up my "herd". :)
