Anybody have any idea what causes these white spots on my RES shell?
He lives in an outdoor pond, and seems otherwise heathy and active.

It's shell rot. Hard to tell from a picture, but my guess is that it is healed and not rotting any more. Does it smell?

No, doesn't smell, and the spots are hard. The rest of the shell looks healthy.

Looks like healed shell rot to me also. Does he bask? Are you just seeing them for the first time?

It looks like to me in my very very unexpert opinon like shell damage to me could be from rubbing on something, but it could also be shell rot. hard to diagnose, but with no smell I would say that he is doing ok.

Yes, he basks, and has access to sun 5-6 hours a day. It's been there a while, although I don't think he had it when I first got him 3-4 years ago.

Maybe old shell rot. I would be concerned it might be fungus with the raised outline around the white and might want a cultue done for fungus. JMHO I have minimal knowledge with aquatics.
