Hi, is someone able to identify what these white patches are on the back of our two year old Hermann tortoises shell please?

From reading other threads I thought they might be burn marks but the temp of his basking lamp is spot on at his shell height, however as we've only had him a couple of wit May be from his previous keeper.

Not sure what it could be except your first guess, heat too close from previous owners or possible fungus, which usually is on the bottom not top shell. Try putting antifungal cream, like athletes foot cream on it daily and see if it starts to get better.

OK thanks for the info. So we could use just normal athletes for cream then? Wow who'd of thought it! ?

Looks like hard water stain to me. Rub in a drop of any kind of oil and see if it goes away. Be sure to polish off all the oil.

Yes any over the counter. Same goes for antibiotic cream too.
So what Yvonne suggest first. You probably already have that.

From looking really really close, it looks like hard water stains, where water droplets have accumulated in those very fine bumpy spots. Before taking any drastic measures, give your tort a nice warm water soak, then use a soft clean toothbrush & give the area a good soft scrubbing. Once done, rinse the area clean, dry off & then apply a light coat of cold compressed coconut oil. Apply, then wipe off.

Im betting it’s just a water stain. Good luck & happy torting.

Hi, we soak him everyday, so tonight when soaking we rubbed extra virgin olive oil into it with a cotton bud and that seems to have helped alot. It looks like the white residue has reduced quite a bit, but we will check again tomorrow in the daylight. We'll keep doing that every day and see how it goes. Thanks very much for the advice ?

Hi Yvonne, we used some extsa virgin olive oil tonight which seems to have made a difference, we'll keep trying that, and maybe baby oil as an alternative, so thanks very much for the advice. ?

Gentle rubbing with the toothbrush in warm water while soaking him, along with a dose of olive oil as @Yvonne G suggested has worked a treat. No more white water stains on his shell. Thanks so much for the advice. ??
