What's all this noise?

I have heard some odd noises from my Russian. He can pass air, squeak when he yawns and hisses every time I pick him up. Is all this normal?

Completely normal. They make all sorts of noises.

When they withdraw their heads into their shells rapidly it forces air out & produces a hiss. They do this when they're scared. He's not happy about being picked up. See if you can find a way to approach him and lift him without scaring him. Talking soothingly helps. Normal, yes. Good, no.

A lot of tortoises don't like being picked up. They don't like not feeling anything solid to grip onto. My russian squeaks sometimes too (he always wants food!!) and it is really cute!

Very normal! You should hear the male Russians when they're breeding ... I can hear them squeaking from across the yard!
