I've been wondering how many subspecies there are of
Greeks? Also what are the names of the subspecies?
Thanks for any info

Although I am not a pro, I know that Testudo Graeca have these following subspecies:

Ibera
Antakyensis
Anamurensis
Graeca

To name a few. I know a pro will be here in minute to tell all of them.

There is also subspecies of each Group....Like Syrian and Lebanese Antakyan Greeks. As well as Jordanian Greeks ssp (but they technically aren't fully recognized yet)

Danny is the man for this thread. :)

Seems like (more than a year ago) Danny had a break down of all the different ones from the different areas and that there was some changes being made to some of the names???

I'll have to search for it.

I would like to revisit the subject again, hopefully we could put pictures with the names and descriptions of each and make a sticky for each one?

T. graeca graeca, North Africa, southern Spain, Sardinia, the Baleares "Greek Tortoise" or "Spur-thighed Tortoise"
T. graeca ibera, Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, "Eurasian Tortoise"
T. graeca anamurensis, Turkey, "Anamur Tortoise"
T. graeca terrestris, southern Israel, "Levantine Tortoise"
T. graeca armenica, Armenia, "Armenian Tortoise"
T. graeca nikolskii, Caucasus, "Caucasian Tortoise" (Albania/Abkhazia-Caucasus Mountains)
T. graeca buxtoni, Caspian Sea area, "Caspian Tortoise"
T. graeca pallasi, Dagestan, "Dagestanian Tortoise" (Russian Federation of Dageston)
T. graeca marokkensis, Marocco, "Maroccan Tortoise"
T. graeca lamberti, Marocco
T. graeca soussensis, Marocco
T. graeca nabeulensis, Tunisia, "Tunisian Tortoise"
T. graeca floweri
T. graeca antakyensis southern Turkey
T. graeca flavominimaralis, Libya, "Libyan Tortoise"

The division of Greek Tortoises into subspecies is difficult and confusing. Given the huge range over three continents, the various terrains, climates, and biotopes have produced a huge number of varieties, with new subspecies constantly being discovered. There are currently at least twenty published subspecies.

T. graeca terrestris, southern Israel, "Levantine Tortoise" is now from what I have read concidered the Golden Greek. It would be like T.g. terrestris ssp
But alot of keepers especially sellers tend to lable any Greek with the lack of brown on the shell a Golden Greek.

OK, this is where I get lost.

I have read, and found references to both T.g. terrestris and T.g.flowerii as being the "golden greek".

But, I don't know how to tell one from the other.

And Jordanian is common name for what ssp ???

Well from what I know of (I have a Jordanian) Testudo graeca ssp. The ssp stands for an undescribed subspecies, which the Jordanians aren't yet.
