My new pardalis which I finally named.... Sabindi :) (its an african name meaning full of life) has a definite underbite. I noticed it the minute I opened her from the container and thought it was cute until I saw a slight crack on the left side that was some what deep. I then became concerned. Over the past 7 days it is getting worse followed by a small crack now on the other side. I have no experience with underbites or over grown beaks.... idk if she even does or if her jaw is just off. Shes barely a year old......

I posted many pics and really need advice on what to do? The left side seems to maaaaybe have a little blood and I'm just freaking out a little bit. The pics that are looking up under her show how her jaw doesn't really align and how to me it looks like a drimel wont help? It seems that because the way her jaw is the top is pushing down on the extended bottom jaw which is now breaking? Please help!

RE: What To DO!?!?

If you are experienced in trimming a beak, then I would do that a little at a time until the underbite overgrowth is back under control...if you are not experienced at this, perhaps a vet or other person who is indeed experienced can offer some assistance...the cracks are likely because of the eating motion (which is necessary :p) and the beak protrudes so it is getting alot more force against it...causing cracks which can then tear into fleshy areas...which is bad...

I want to go get one but I feel like that may actually break it off really low :( i think its passed that point.... she is doing great she eats more than any of my torts and yesterday spent the whole day outside with me in the sun while I did some gardening, she has a blast. Im just so broke I don't know how I'm going to go to the vet and my work only deals with cats or dogs or it would be free..... I guess its time to use that care credit card....

If it's beak is strong enough to tear plants and eat than I think it might not be as bad as you think. Without some clearer pictures I'm going to hesitate giving you any further advice. It may be better to let a vet do what they are supposed to do best. Best of luck to you.

I think that gradual trimming would definitely help. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, and the vet is too expensive, maybe you can see if a local reptile rescue or another experienced tortoise keeper would be willing to help you? @Tyler Stewart lives within driving distance of you, I believe (he breeds and sells a plethora of tortoise species).

Look at the underbite/crossbite that I trimmed before Christmas (1st pic) and now (2nd pic) - what a difference in just 8 weeks.

We still have many months to go before her beak is normal, but I think by the time she is adult, we can get it there. :) This was an acquaintance's tortoise up until a week ago... now she lives with me.

O wow much better! That gives me hope :D yea she has an appointment with a vet at mountain vista animal hospital next Saturday. He specializes in tortoises and most exotic stores here in vegas recommended him. He also had a bit of a wait to see him so he must be good? She is currently eating like a crazy woman and loves her baths, her humid enclosure, outdoor playpen..... etc. Just seems to be loving life! I hope she will be okay till Saturday. I would email tyler from tort supply but I feel bad I'm sure he's very busy with kids and torts and such, but that is a great idea.....

Very cute leo you have there ;)

Alright finally off to the vet to get Bindi's grill all fixed up! I contacted Tyler Stewart for a vet recommendation and changed my vet so I had to wait a few moreeeeee days but I'm excited to finally get her looking normal. I'll post pics and let everyone know about my experience later on today :)

They have to put her under anesthesia tomorrow to file back her upper and lower beak and then use bonding material to fix the cracks because they are so deep :( I'm nervous about it.... Something has to be done because the cracks are so deep now the vet said if her beak breaks she could have a massive bleed and her lower beak could never grow back!!!

The vet was amazing and I loved the whole experience. Also VERY affordable with everything costing under $100. I put down tyler stewart as a reference and all the girls told me how cute he was and how they love when he comes in. hahahaha.

Bindi was also very outgoing the whole time and seemed to love the car ride sticking her neck out the whole time... very cute :) she was def a hit at the vet!

Here you can see how bad the crack has gotten.
