Looks like a horsfield/Russian :)
Is this your first tort? They are brilliant little characters! They also love to dig so I'm sure he would love some top soil or cococoir as a substrate rather than the wood chip things :)

A few inches anyway, i normally go as deep as I can safely allowing enough head height and extra so he can't climb out.
If you take some pics of your enclosure I'm sure everyone can help you get on the right track :)
What are you doing for food, light and heat at the moment?
P.s we love pics so get snapping lol

What a handsome little tortoise, and it looks to be captive-bred, judging by the shell and growth.

It's so hard to tell a tortoise's age, unless the actual hatch date is known. I'd give a broad guess of 5-15 years old. So young, but not a baby. :)

Feel free to ask questions on here, and there is also great information on www.russiantortoise.net
