weird behaviour from my herman???

My herman tortoise made the transition from living in a vivarium at the start of this summer, I was away for alot of the summer, but after returning recenetly, I have only seen weird behaviour on his part e.g. not eating, staying in his shelter and not coming out. I am very worried as he isnt getting any energy because he isn't under the sun as he stays in his shelter like I said, he also hasnt been eating or drinking, and it goes with out saying that this is unhealthy, what should I do, has anyone had any similar experiences?

I'd take him to your vet if he's outside, but not eating/drinking. Is the food disturbed at all? What are you feeding him? Does he have a water dish large enough to climb into, to soak?

Staying in his shelter during most of the day, otoh, is pretty much normal...mine only come out in the mornings from sun-up 'til about 9am, then from about 5pm until dusk...they're avoiding the heat of the day.
