So in my tort's outdoor pen I have a water dish for him, and it's shallow so he can soak and stuff, but it gets really HOT. Later in the day when the sun hits the whole of the area, the temperature skyrockets, because its not deep or anything. He doesn't really use it... ever :( but how can I keep it cool so that if he wants a drink, he doesn't get baked to a crisp??

Put it in the shade. It my still get warm, but it shouldn't get hot if the sun isn't beating on it.

Hmm.. Okay the yard gets shade on one half in the morning, but he's usually sleeping then. Could I plant something tall around it, that wouldn't cover anything up, but could provide shade?

Yes, or you could just build a wood canopy like over it, or I have an outdoor table that I put over one of mine.

:) I'll try moving it first, and see if that helps cool it down... I could always add some MORE plants:D
