UVB frustration-Help please

Hey All,

I am a bit frustrated and confused after reading many of the past threads on here, and the care sheets. I have seen many veteran members recommend MVBs as the best UVB source, yet these usually cant be used in a closed chamber environment.

I am looking to use a 48" Reptisun 10.0 T5HO which would run the length of the enclosure, and be suspended from the ceiling, at the recommended height from the manufacturer. Would this be sufficient UVB?

Yes, it will work fine. Just remember the bulb needs to be changed out at 6 months. The uv isn't good after that time.

Probably, but only a light meter will confirm this. Not using a light meter to measure the UV output of your bulb in your enclosure at your mounting height is akin to not using a thermometer to tell the temperature in your enclosure.

MVBs are good and they have their place. In my experience, their place is not in a closed chamber. They over heat mine.

I use the Arcadia 12% HO bulbs in 34 or 46" lengths in my enclosures. These are similar to the ones you are looking at. I mount mine at about 20" and they make so much UV that I only run them for 4 hours a day to simulate the UV curve that happens outside. I run a regular florescent bulb in the 5000-6500K color range all day to give them more light. I use a lower wattage bulb for basking. 65 watt bulbs work well for me in my large closed chambers.

Thanks Tom. After reading reviews of Zoomed dome lamps shorting out and causing fires, I am thinking about using the Exoterra wire lamps for the 100w CHE and the 65w flood light. Any thoughts? My main concern is safety.
