UVA or UVB or both?

Hello, I live in Minnesota where the warmth is unpredictable. I am a newbie with a 4 year old russian tortoise. I have had him for 4 days now, and I want to be sure I am doing everything right. I was told to use a UVA non-coiled bulb, but I have read conflicting reports of using a UVB. Do you use both and for how many hours a day? Also, is it normal for it to hide in his half log in the evening hours even when his light is on? I really need to soak him, but he is hiding and I don't think I should move his log to get him. I think he should wake up on his own. On the other hand, I need to soak him. The last time I soaked him was 2 days ago. Any help would be much appreciated!

He needs heat (uva) but it doesn't have to be light. He does need UVB light. The mercury vapor bulbs will accomplish both. Avoid the coil bulbs by all means. The other option is a tube UVB bulb. 14 hours of light a day.
By all means, wake him up and soak him.
