Tortoise not eating properly

Hello I have an indian star tortoise (it is a male and 1 year old). I keep him in a wooden box full of soil and a mercury vapour bulb hanging on the top. He nowadays seems very fussy in eating and has lost his appetite. I soak him in warm water everyday, I keep him out in the house for activity. I give him escarole, romaine, wheat grass, mustard greens etc for his diet. He passes his stools properly and has no problem, and is well hydrated too Though he seems to ignore the food and leave it aside. He only nibbles on grass and a bit of food which I give him. His favourite food is tortoise pellets, I cant give them everyday, since they are high in sugar. Is it that my tortoise is stubborn than other tortoises or am I bad at understanding at what he needs.

Mine has been doing the same thing lately it could be that they are sensing that it's hibernation time. Mine has been a bit of a stubborn eater lately because I don't want to hibernate her on the first year I've had her
