I recently introduced my tortoise into alfalfa grass hay. He WILL NOT eat it unless I add it to some other vegetable (Lettuce, kale, and collard greens typically). I started off with little amount, and I keep a normal amount now. I just add some on top of it and he will eat it. What can I do to get him to eat it without other vegetables all of the time? I am currently growing a few natural grasses to experiment with soon, maybe he will eat those!

Thanks for the help :tort:

Most young tortoises don't eat hay or grass. Also, alfalfa should not be a big part of a tortoise's diet. It doesn't have the correct calcium/phosphorus ratio.

I am purchasing a seed mix and waiting for it to grow, for now I use alfalfa for grasses

My leopards will eat orchard grass hay the best. If I cut it up and mix in some mazuri they eat it great.
