The pet store I got my red foot from told us we should be sprinkling timothy hay throughout the enclosure and sold us a big bag I used to back when he was on repti-bark.

Today when i was spraying his shell, I saw the bag of hay and wondered if I should put it in his new enclosure.

What do you guys think?

Another example of Pet Store NONSENSE!!!

Timothy hay is for horses and "grassland" tortoises.. NEVER Redfoot tortoises.

Ah. Won't put it back then.

So would it hurt him?

The pet store said it wasn't for eating but rather to make everything smell nicer to him. I don't know if that makes any sense at all haha.

For the redfoot tortoises you need a substrate that you can keep moist. So it would be good to use something like spagnum moss. I've heard folks say you can buy it a Lowe's.

Home Depot carries it too, the same Lee Mosser brand that Terry uses. It is I think $4 a bag.

Hays all types and Aspen if kept wet mold and mildew. Do not use these with Redfoots if you keep them in a damp enviornment-and you should. I suggest the Mosser Lee Spargnum moss and Terry's site listed above.
