I have made it my mission to get Tank (a very big sulcata) to eat Mazuri. For the last few months he's been eating nothing but lettuce, apples, and other grocery store greens. I'd like to get him on a hay- based diet, so he's not eating 3 heads of romaine lettuce daily.
(You think I'm kidding?)
So here's my Mazuri patty recipe.
**everything is an estimate**
I WOULD NOT FEED THIS TO BABY TORTS. (Stringy hay and fruit)
Take 2.5- 3 cups of Mazuri.
I like the original formula, but I only have the High Fiber type. Add ONE cup of water.
DO NOT FILL THE CUP LIKE I DID!
WATER MAKES IT EXPAND!!!
Drain the excess water when its soaked completely and soft (10 minutes).
Then, grab a food processor and add a few handfuls of your favorite hay. I like orchard.
Press the pulse button (or switch) and break it up a bit. It WILL NOT shred, so don't worry if its stringy.
After this, add HALF the Mazuri.
Blend on LOW for a minute.
Dont fret, its going to be powdery for a bit longer.
Mix the hay into through the Mazuri, then blend in the rest, SLOWLY.
Now comes the fun part.
I used APPLE SKIN and blueberries as my fruit (the skin of one apple and a handful of berries).
You may chose your fruit, but overall there should only be around 1 & 1/2 cups.
Blend that in and then begin to add a head of romaine lettuce.
DON'T ADD THE STEM
THE IMPROVEMENT PART IS TO ADD LESS PRODUCE EVERYTIME YOU MAKE A NEW BATCH. This transitions the tortoise to Mazuri.
Once it is mixed, press the mixture into a mold (or make patties with your hands, like a hamburger patty).
You can use them right away, or use cling wrap to keep them fresh in the fridge for up to 6 days.
This recipe makes FIVE 3/4 cup patties.
Success!!
Please feed in moderation, I'd say one or two patties daily, as there is quite a bit of sugar in it.
Thank you for reading!
Tiffany.
