Hi, i have read up about the temperatures for a Hermanns tortoise, and his basking should be between 34-36c. I have a thermometer made by exo terra (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00026Z4PS/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20)

I also have a IR temp gun. The problem i am having is the liquid crystal therm is saying 36.5, and the IR gun is saying 32. I have also added some slate under the basking lamp, directly under it, to see if he sits on that.

My question is, how far away should the light be(i use a combined light), and which thermometer would be more reliable, the liquid crystal, or the gun?

Regards

Most lights tell you on the box how far they should be from the tortoise's back. It is usually about 12", but you should always check the temp under the light to be sure it isn't getting too hot.

By "combined light" do you mean a Mercury Vapor Bulb - a UVB and heat light all in one?

I just use my hand to check the temp (very scientific, I know), but most everyone here swears by the gun.
