The cheaper ones are not very accurate and not calibrated for reading human skin. The human versions read a very narrow range and read that range much more accurately. The hardware store ones read a much wider range and are much more versatile.

It reminds me of the one I have at home that was $17 that I use to read large areas vs. the one I used at work that was $400 and could read the temperature differences in 16 gauge wire.
