Hi everyone. I'm sure this is the most common post but... I'm a new tortoise mom and just want to make sure my little guy is what he is so that I can provide him with the best possible habitat. I was told he was a Greek, but being new I'm at a loss for telling the different parts and patterns of subspecies. Can you tell me for sure? I am also curious as to if he is in fact a he, but I have no pictures of his little tush atm. Thank you in advance!

Hi Meg:

Looks like a little Greek tortoise to me. He also looks a bit cold. Have you measured his temperatures all over the floor of his habitat? Being a very young baby, he should not be allowed to get cooler than 78F or so, and warmer is better.

I am newer to the tortoise forums but he definitely looks similar to my tortoise which is an Ibera Greek tortoise.
I would definitely say your tort is a Greek as well

Subspecies though I am not really sure, but kind of resembles an Ibera

How can you tell he looks cold? That is fascinating. The first photo of him on the ground is from the previous owner, I didn't have any clear photos at work when I was on break and posting. His temperature is right around 80 atm and he just went into his log for a bit. I've been really concerned about trying to keep him warm enough. He has both day and night basking lamps, and on really cold days/nights I'll turn them both on. He only has the 10 gal he came with right now but I'm panning on making him a nice sized table soon. Thanks for the help!

You mean the spurs on his thighs? I hadn't really looked yet but that would make sense wouldn't it? I just feel bad looking at his little tush. I wouldn't want someone I just met looking at my tush, no matter how much leafy goodness they put in front of me. lol I think he is still too young to sex but I'll try and post some more pics of him soon :) Thanks again.

Thank you, It's good to know where he hails from. I was concerned he might be a Hermann's or Russian and that his Greek name wouldn't suit then lol. It's bad enough that he is probably a she. But we will love him even if he is a she. ;) He is supposedly about 8-9 months old. So I'm saying he probably was born around April, just for sake of argument. Thanks again!
