substrate for russian tort ?

hi, can someone help me, the pet shop told me to use a kind of wood chip stuff for the base and use alot as they like to dig but i see alot of u ste using some kind of dirt....what is the best stuff to use ? And are you meant to keep it moist ? As my stuff is dry.....thanks, any tips appreciated

I prefer coco coir. It can be bought at garden centers in big blocks much cheaper than the little pet store blocks. I also like fine grade orchid bark and coco chips.

I'm not a fan of topsoil, because it is basically a mixed mulch of all sorts of things and there is no way to know what is in it. Its also really messy.

I live in Canada and coconut coir isn't readily available in my neck of the woods. I use topsoil-peat moss, 50-50 mix. It holds moisture well and you can pack it down, so it doesn't slip around like dry bark.

thankyou, i live in the UK so i don't know if they sell the coco stuff or not....will check it out

I use a mix of soft and loose coconut fiber and my tort loves it! We used to use top soil and he didn't care for it much.
