Do any of you brush your tort's shell? There is some staining on my redfoots due to the eco earth and him burrying himself. Now that he's no longer burrowing, I thought I'd give him a nice scrubbin' :D

What should I use? Just water?

Hi John:

I sometimes take in some pretty dirty tortoises! First thing I do is set them up in a tub of warm water (high sides so they can't climb out). I let them soak for about a half hour. Then I take a soft bristle scrub brush and gently scrub the tortoise. I even scrub the legs and head (if he'll let me). On the particularly dirty ones that plain water won't soften, I'll add a bit of baby shampoo to the water. When I add the shampoo, I stay there and watch so they don't drink it, but I scrub them right away so I can rinse them off. That usually does the trick.

Indie likes to take naps on top of her Mazuri after she's done eating it. So, yeah I have to clean her off with with a toothbrush about once a week or else the Mazuri dries up on her shell and she stinks.

Old toothbrush and warm water works for me too.... and I do the heads and legs on all mine. Just go gently at first!

I use a toothbrush and a warm water soak as well. The soak loosens up the mess and the toothbrush gently removes. I keep multiple torts together so the regularly climb on eachother and leave food/mud/urates/unidentifiable junk on eachothers backs and if the hose doesn't do the trick, the toothbrush and warm water always does.
