I have a large bag of black slate tiles , can I smash it to makes chips for outdoor enclosure please

Sections of slate make great feeding platforms and having them scattered around an enclosure help with nail maintenance.
However, it wouldn't make a suitable substrate.
Tiny, jagged stones are a hazard. Etc.
