What size will my female and male marginated torts grow to? And how do you measure a tort is it side to side or length? Many thanks

Hi Wilkoqpr:

The Marginated tortoise (Testudo Marginata) is the largest of the Mediterranean tortoises. Adults can attain a length of 35cm and 5kg in weight.

You measure a tortoise in a straight line from front to back. Easiest way is to put a tape measure up against a wall, then put the tortoise next to the tape measure, pushing it up against the wall so its head withdraws.

The male will probably start practice breeding before he gets to be full grown, but the female won't be ready until she's full grown.

8-9" and up is breeding size for Marginateds. Males and females both can often sucessfully begin mating at about 7-7.5".
