should I be concerned - looks like a crack in her shell

our 5 year old Russian Tortoise looks like she may have a crack in her shell, by her tail. It was like this when she was given to us (from a "friend" who couldn't keep her) - I'm just not sure if it's something that needs to be treated or if it is a "typical" thing - this is all new to us.

Yes, that would be worrisome. Dab on some Neosporin to try to keep it clean. Your worry would be about infection.
