I don't know if this is considered odd behavior. I just caught my redfoot scraping her beak on the corner of a flat rock. I'd say that maybe there was leftover mazuri stuck to it, but Loki just kept at it. There are three cuttlebone provided in the enclosure that get nibbled on from time to time and food is lightly sprinkled with calcium/multivitamin once a week. Is this the time to consider supplementing with Miner-all or is my tort just treating herself to a beakicure?

Sorry about the intro. I trimmed the video to exclude the first 15 seconds, but moron me somehow uploaded the un-cut version:

Cute torts. I wish mine would go after the rocks in their enclousre like that. When mine do that, I really do nothing. It's when they try to eat the small rocks/stones that I would want to add something to their diet, my opionion, see what others say.

I caught my biggest one doing this last week too. The slate she was chomping on wasn't even where she usually gets her food but one under her MVB that she sometimes lays on for basking, so I know she wasn't just aiming for some food and missing. She chewed away at it for a minute or two and I couldn't tell if she was filing her beak or just trying to tell me she was hungry since it was right before meal time. Her beak has always been nice and even, maybe she puts more effort into self maintenance then I thought.

20150204_152604.jpg Thank you, all! Loki's beak looks like it can take a good scraping :p Tortoises never cease to amaze me. I just wanted to make sure this behavior isn't self-destructive or otherwise harmful. I couldn't seem to find anything on the subject.
