I had Vladlena my Russian tortoise outside today since it was sunny and warm. I left for just a little while to go look at a house for sale. I come back and I can't find her. She stays in a fenced-in area full of overgrown weeds when she's outside. So of course, I pull out every single plant in there, no tortoise. :( I see some plants moving and I look through there, all excited, but of course, I ended up grabbing a frog.

My kid comes out to help, but really, he's kinda just getting in the way, so I tell him to go shine the light by the lettuce garden. Oh yeah, it's dark out, btw. So as I'm pointing to the garden for him to go look in, I notice a slightly off colored spot by the leaf pile. She was half buried in the lettuce garden. :p She had to have gotten out of a fenced-in area, and then somehow she got into my fenced-in garden.

I'm glad I found her, but I was so upset. It's that upset where even when it turns out ok, you're still upset. The sad hasn't worn off yet. XD

I know, I didn't think she would be able to get so far :( She usually just likes to dig in there and eat the weeds.

Russians are notorious escape artists. Maybe you can take some photos in the daylight and we can help you plan some security updates!

Well now it's completely destroyed XD I tore up the whole area trying to find her. I think maybe I should partially bury the gate so it'll be harder to dig under it.

Maybe you can put a footer of some kind that you have to step over to get in so she can't push her way out? If I'm not mistaken russians are both climbers and diggers. You may have your hands full.

Yeah, I'm hoping she didn't climb it. There's a stone path on the other side, and she'd probably get hurt falling from the height. It's not too tall, it's just a really long baby gate thing. I've seen her dig under it before though.

So glad you found her. Torts can move faster than you think, a valuable lesson learned though. Hope she doesn't give you any more heart attacks!!
