safe grasses

Is Spear grass or Indian needle grass safe for a sulcata to eat and/ or as substrate?

I wouldn't use grass as substrate, but it's ok out in the yard. I doubt they'll eat it once the seeds develop, but while it's young and tender it's edible.

My concern is with the needles on the spear grass. can it or will it penetrate the tortoise skin and can they eat it green and or dried.

There is no grass that is going to harm a sulcata physically. They can walk around on goat heads and the gnarliest of fox tails with no problem.
