RES advice for a relative

My cousin currently has two red ear sliders in a 100 gallon tank. She has had them since they were about the size of a silver dollar and they are both now over 6 inches. Her husband doesn't want her to keep them anymore and she's offered to give them to me. He says the water is too dirty and constantly needs changing that's why he wants to get rid of the turtles. She is really attached to them and I just recommended trying to keep the tank cleaner and maybe that will suffice with her husband. I am not sure what type of filter she has but I recommended she get the Fluval FX 6 canister filter. I also recommended to reduce the amount of light that the tank gets through out the day and any natural light to decrease algae growth. Just curious if anyone has any thoughts or recommendations on the FX 6 or any other advice that she can take to help out her problem. Again she is really attached to these turtles and I would prefer they stay with her but I will take them if I have to.

Pretty good rule of thumb....if you have turtle in a 100 gallon tank, you will want it to pump/clean 2 or 3 times that tank volume....a good filtration set up will make all of the difference.....
