Questionable Appearance of Shell on Russian Tortoise

I recently received a Russian tortoise for my birthday. When I first received him, his shell was more round and darker. I've ensured that he has water as well as proper nourishment and sunlight. I took him to a vet and was told there were no problems and that as seasons change and sunlight becomes more sparse, there color becomes more pale. Whether or not this is true, I don't know. I just wanted to ensure I was doing everything I could to make sure he was healthy. I understand his color changing based on the seasons but I guess I didn't understand his shape changing. He still is active and moves around often.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
