Just got my first tortoise, a cute lil leopard. I was wondering why when I take lil Teto outside he seems to try and eat the sidewalk.

Hi J3vans:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

Can you tell us a bit about how you have your little guy set up? It helps us give you a more informed answer if we know a bit more about him and his habitat.

Do you offer a calcium supplement?

What would you like us to call you?

...and may we know appx. where in the world you are?

He's trying to get trace minerals he smells in the concrete. The will also do this to clay pots and drinking dishes and most pourous stone you may have in the enclosure.

It could be a number of things...mineral deficiency, curiosity, boredom...etc... Mine will eat rocks from time to time.

Thanks everyone.
I've only had him for just over a week. He was a present for my wife and she convinced me to get him as an early bday present for her( her bday is in june, yeah really early) but she wanted him so much and had done a lot of research so I gave in. But we still were not really ready. Now we have both been doing a lot of learning and its been a real enjoyable experience.
He does not have a cuttle bone, but we have been putting the calcium supplement on his food. Right now he's just being feed the mazuri pellets and some veggies and greens. We are waiting for the grazing seed mix to get here so we can get him on mostly grasses. And we have been looking at the local nurseries for suitable plants.
We live in Florida and my names James. Again thanks for the help.
