Proper hide?

My Russian tort has always loved to dig when he goes to sleep. However, I’ve noticed that when he digs in his hide he tries to dig straight through it, not at an angle or towards the bottom. So he ends up just scratching the back of his hide (made of plastic) instead of actually digging. He barely moves any dirt. What can I do to help? I don’t want him to hurt his hands since he scrapes at it for hours it seems like. Should I angle the hide down while on a hill of substrate, so it forces him to dig down?

The substrate is about 4-5 inches everywhere outside his hide, but about 7 inches in his hide.

You could try adding about another 4-5 inches of substrate or try building it for him and see if he will use it.
